COSELA® Acknowledged by the CACA Expert Consensus, One Year After China NDA Approval

Release time:2023-07-12

The Chinese Anti-Cancer Association recently unveiled the Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer Chemotherapy Induced Neutropenia (2023 version). The inclusion of COSELA® (trilaciclib hydrochloride for injection) within the Consensus, marking a significant recognition for this innovative myeloprotective drug co-developed by Simcere Pharmaceutical Group and G1 Therapeutics.

Within the "Primary Prevention of FN Section" of the Consensus, specific mention is made of COSELA®. The passage highlights the regulatory approval achievements of trilaciclib, a cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitor, in the United States on February 12, 2021, and in China on July 13, 2022. Notably, trilaciclib is administered to patients with extensive small cell lung cancer before they receive etoposide and platinum-based chemotherapy regimens, effectively reducing the incidence of chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression. Phase II clinical trial results reveal that the prophylactic use of trilaciclib prior to chemotherapy in patients with extensive stage small cell lung cancer led to a significant reduction in the duration (mean duration of neutropenia reduced from 4 days to 0, P < 0.0001) and incidence (from 49.1% to 1.9%; adjusted RR = 0.038, 95% CI: 0.008 to 0.195) of severe neutropenia during the first treatment cycle.

Chemotherapy stands as a cornerstone therapy for various malignancies, effectively targeting tumor cells. However, its potent systemic effects often give rise to toxic side effects. Among the most common and dose-limiting hematological adverse reactions is chemotherapy-induced neutropenia, which can lead to dose reduction or delays in chemotherapy administration, febrile neutropenia, and severe infections. These complications result in increased treatment costs, compromised chemotherapy efficacy, and potentially life-threatening situations.

It is against this backdrop that, in July 2022, COSELA® obtained approval from the China National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) specifically for patients with extensive-stage small cell lung cancer. COSELA® is administered prior to platinum-based drugs in combination with an etoposide regimen, effectively reducing the incidence of myelosuppression caused by chemotherapy.

Simcere Zaiming takes great pride in its partnership with G1 Therapeutics to co-develop this groundbreaking drug, COSELA®. Its inclusion in the esteemed CACA Expert Consensus serves as a testament to our commitment to advancing cancer care and improving patient outcomes in China and beyond. We remain dedicated to driving innovation and delivering transformative solutions that address the pressing needs of oncology patients and healthcare professionals alike.
